Taking Online Dating Safety Seriously

When it comes to meeting people online you can never be too sure who you're exactly meeting until you get to know the person well. For this reason, online dating safety is very important for both men and women. This includes meeting people on traditional dating sites as well as same-sex sites. You can never take too many precautions when you're starting a relationship with somebody you've met online.
You should never meet a stranger anywhere other than a public place. It doesn't matter how well you think you know them, how many times you've talked to them on the phone or emailed and text messaged them. Always tell somebody where you're going to meet the person and give them as much information about your date as possible. This includes their phone number, email address, address, place of work, car license plate number, and photo, etc.
However, while you collect all of this information about the person you're meeting, you should never reveal some of these personal details about yourself, such as your address and place of work. And when using an email address, it should be a free account.
Don't use an address from work or anywhere else that can be traced back to you. When on the date trust your instincts and intuition. If something doesn't feel right then go by your gut instinct and call it off.
If you meet your date at a restaurant and then decide to go somewhere else, make sure to let somebody know where you're going. If you feel uncomfortable or threatened in any way then end the meeting and don't be afraid to ask for help or call the police. Taking a mobile phone to the meeting is essential so you can keep in contact with friends. Depending on where you live and what the local laws are, you may want to protect yourself by carrying pepper spray or mace with you.
It's also a good idea to steer clear from married people for obvious reasons. Getting involved with somebody who's already married can only lead to problems. You should never meet anybody without seeing a recent photo of them. While this may be hard to do, make sure to ask for one. If you meet the person and they look nothing like their photo then you know they're not trustworthy.
You may also want to just meet people from paid dating websites as these members have to use a credit card to join. This means there's at least some way of tracking them down. If you use a free service, it is usually very difficult or impossible to tell who is who.
Taking online dating safety seriously is very important just in case something happens. While you need to use common sense and incorporate some other safety precautions, remember you can still meet many great singles by using online dating services. There are thousands of new romances launched around the world on a daily basis and many of these end up in marriages or long-term relationships.
